Saya (鞘) is the Japanese term for a scabbard, and specifically refers to the scabbard for a sword or knife. The saya of a koshirae are normally manufactured from very lightweight wood, with a coat of lacquer on the exterior. The wood is light enough that great care must be taken when drawing the sword; incorrect form may result in the blade of the sword slicing through the saya and severing one or more fingers. Correct drawing and sheathing of the blade involves contacting the mune rather than ha to the inside of the scabbard. The saya also has a wooden knob (栗形 kurigata) on one side for attaching a braided cord (sageo), and may have a shitodome to accent the kurigata as well as an end cap (小尻 kojiri) made from metal. Traditionally the koiguchi and kojiri were made from buffalo horn. Note: It is only a saya without sageo, shitodome, kojiri.

ITS HERE AND ITS AWESOME! I have had the same katana for 6 ...
It was a week late and we didnt know if it would be here at all because of some mixed reviews but.... ITS HERE AND ITS AWESOME! I have had the same katana for 6 years and we desperately needed a new saya. This did the job. I bought it with the idea of making it match my wakizashi and wow, let me tell ya, for the $ this thing is sturdy and the koiguchi is nice and snug. THANK YOU SHIJIAN

Absolutely beautiful!
I ordered color number 18 (black and red). While the koiguchi, was just a little too small for the habaki, that's actually a good thing since it lets me file it to just the right size for the proper fit. The color is unbelievable (the picture doesn't do it justice) and the lacquer quality is remarkable. Absolutely worth the money and I'd be happy to order this again should the need ever arise. My only real complaint is that there is no shitodome, which in my case is purely an aesthetic issue since I won't be wearing it every day anyway.

Nice replacement Saya.
For a replacement saya, its a lot easier than trying to make one. Finish seemed pretty decent and its relatively solid. I think they send them very tight fitting so you have some adjusting room for your katana, but dont go too far....

Great value for the money.
I bought an Iaito 3 years ago. It wasn't the best quality but coming from Japan for almost a grand I expected the Saya to fit well. It never did. The sword rattled and would not stay in when I bend down. I purchased this as a replacement. Is not fancy but fits very well. I painted it since it looks a little "power ranger". Great purchase for the price!

I found no flaws with this saya, its tight on my katana but it compliments it and once filed down just a little bit fits it. In the pictures I already have put my accessories and sword on it already.

Worth the wait
Your browser does not support HTML5 video. The original order was lost so I contacted them and they sent me another. It took a little while but the quality is good. It didn’t come with the straps I already had those. The sword o bought it for fits great!

Sword
Looks nice but turn out to be too short for a standard sword. Will keep for a future sword. Got worried because order was declared lost after 40 days, then it showed up.

Beware, termites inside!
Good look, but there were termites or some kind of wood worms in the wood of the saya.I had to place the saya in my oven at 170˚F for 40 minutes in order to stop seeing wood dust exuding from it.
