So far so good!
My first impressions are really good. The blade came covered in oil and inside of a plastic sleeve, then wrapped in Chinese newspaper (awesome!). Blade geometry is excellent, polish is good, sharpness is better than most knives when they come out of the box. The tang is rough, mine had no rust. The hamon is authentic. The habaki fits very tight, and is solid brass with good, sharp angles. It could be polished up or engraved a bit, which is great because I'm glad to have the option to do that myself. This will be a big, heavy tanto. I have not tried to cut anything with it but if it's clay tempered 1095 it should do just fine. Once I'm done making the knife I'll give it a final polish. I wouldn't recommend this for beginner knife makers, you'll probably want to have a bit of experience before a project like this.
