BIG BANG THEORY S5 (DVD/S) [2012]

Still keeps going -- different, but good
I have read some of the reviews (in particular, the ones that are not too positive) and I have to say: It still makes me laugh out loud... :-) OK, this season has several week episodes: The back-and-forth episodes at the beginning of the second disk are pretty boring. Seems that they did not really have something for a complete episode, so these are just patchworks of small bits and pieces. But the first episodes and the last about eight are really fun to watchOne big point of discussion seems to be: Not enough science. Too much personal life. I do not care too much that the focus of the series has changed. People change. Repetition is boring. My other two beloved series (House, Monk) really got boring when it got to the fifth season. Because nothing changed. Just more of the same. Only different.I am a scientist (somewhere between Sheldon and Bernadette in discipline) and I *love* to see good jokes about the scientific part of their lives. But we had loads of great, great jokes on that front that at least I will never forget ("Geology is not a real science!", and the spherical sheep in vacuum joke, and the dark side of the moon). But people from science should be allowed to have a personal life, to change, to develop. (Sorry for my bad English.) And the focus on the more personal stuff is just cool because otherwise, it would get repetitious. Leslie was great, but only for some time. Kripke is definitely great, but I would not want his rhotacism (just got that from Wikipedia) in every episode -- it is only this funny. So, yeah: If you love the characters, and if you think that "a little different" can still be good, then the fifth season is good for you. Full stop.I am more worried about the sixth season: They are so happy showing Howard floating through the space station, there is hardly anything happening in the first episode. But I hope that what we have seen in the finale will produce, again, something new and pretty crazy. I have always liked Stuart, and it appears we are seeing a hell more of him now! ;-) And finally, Rajesh has found somebody to love... How sweet! I hope for the best.

Amazing, Brillant BUT..... (Warning: Spoilers)
First of all I love this show, always have. I started to watch it quite a few years ago (before everyone in both America and England swears they are fans and love it when they havent even watched a whole season) so it does pain me to say that it is starting to decline a little bit. There are now pratically 7 main characters, which is way too many. I cant remember when there was just the 5 main characters sitting together, which is when some of the best laughs come from. I do love Amy and Berandette but they are overwhelming Penny, Sheldon, Lenoard, Raj and Howard. I'm not saying they should get rid of them, but to reduce their screen time would be better. I've seen episodes where the two of them are featured more than the orginal characters. They need to have an episode with just the 5 of them again. I'm really sorry to say this but they are slowly turning into Friends a LITTLE bit. They need to reduce the amount of girls, it was funnier with just Penny and how she managed to be confident and hold her own despite being around 4 men. Her smarts were funnier when it was just her presenting them as the contrast was strong. I also feel they are starting to move away from the characters (Lenoard is becoming a bit too sarcastic)The best laughs come from the orginal 5 cast members.I did give it 4 stars as it definatly the best comedy show around at the moment and still manages to have me in stiches in every episode. I do love the on-again relationship of Penny and Lenoard, Howard maturing and Sheldon just being Sheldon. <3 x

Thin material, threadbare even, but can grow on you ...
I could say I was sure that it's pretty hard to keep a project like The Big Bang Theory chugging along for so many years and still keep it fresh. I could say that. But, on the contrary, I see the opposite of this being true: the Big Bang guys not only have all of science as their theatre, they also have everything associated with comic books, sci-fi movies, role-playing games and every other pastime and diversion beloved by nerds. It's a big playground. In fact, being physicists and interested in literally everything, Leonard and his pals could get themselves involved in absolutely everything. The opportunities are endless. So for this reason I must say that I am disappointed by stories where, for instance, Sheldon acts out his terror of birds, or he is adamant that he should be the centre of attention when his mother visits. These might be worthy themes for inferior sitcoms, but we expect better in The Big Bang Theory. The material is thin. The writers show Sheldon to be an imbecile rather than him being a genius who has quirks. Because at the end of the day, we accept Sheldon's craziness because he has an IQ which cannot be accurately measured. The stories should try to always emphasise that. Otherwise we are sitting back and watching the antics of a fool.Having said all this, I remember vividly that I didn't think too much of season four when I first saw it. But I grew to like it very much. I dare say the same will happen again. So ... five stars !! Ha ha, bazinga !!
