Discontinued model but good buy if you can get it under $200AUD
I already had the 4500 that I bought at full retail price 6 years ago and it’s a real workhorse. When I saw the 4000 on sale at Amazon for $197AUD with free delivery I wasn’t sure whether to buy a discontinued model even though it was a good deal. The new MQ Saltist currently runs about $320AUD.To make my mind up I went to my local Tackleworld and spun a few of the new monocoque (MQ) Saltist models and to be honest I couldn’t tell the difference between the new ones and my old 4500. To me the older side plate model felt like it had less backlash. So whilst the newer MQ Saltist’s have stronger drags with bigger crown gears and less likely to get ingress due to monocoque body I bought the smaller 4000 and couldn’t be happier. Whilst newer is sometimes better, older is often good enough. These reels are mainly used for live baiting Yakkas for Kingfish. They are not finesse reels and therefor are a little heavy but I prefer metal reel bodies over plastic. The rotors are plastic but solid.I fish 40lb braid on the 4000 and 50lb braid on the 4500.In conclusion compare the prices to your local tackle shops on the Saltist MQ and if these older models are over a hundred dollars cheaper buy some nice Japanese braid and fluorocarbon leader with the change.Tight lines!

Diawa Saltist 5000 fishing reel
Excited to get my new fishing only to find that the item has a manual bail. The bail on the reel does not close when you turn the handle. The reel does seem to be very good quality and Diawa has alway given me much satisfaction.
